Hi, I'm Tom (MSci, PGCE), a full-time Maths, Science and study skills tutor and former Secondary School Science teacher with full Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

I am a dedicated and hard-working tutor who strives to provide top quality services for students from all backgrounds including catering for SEN, EAL and students who receive their schooling from home or who have other alternative arrangements.

Typical tutoring workflow

Students are encouraged to think about which topics are tricky for them. We use our experience to keep discussions closely in-line with examinable specification points and ensure our time is used efficiently.

Tutorials are pre-planned to national teaching standards.

Reminder

Sent prior to our tutorial including scheduled topics/concepts to be covered and anything to prepare.

Tutorial lesson

Our tutorial takes places where we review topics, practice questions and demystify content.

Summary email

A summary of the content covered is delivered after each session including whiteboard annotations.

Study guidance

Personalised strategies are suggested to help with student organisation between tutorials.

Ongoing support

We maintain regular communications for ongoing help and support.

Tutorial lessons

Please find below an example of a typical tutorial lesson:

Starter quiz - We'll try to recall as much content as we can from the previous session! This is great for retention of information and gets our minds warmed up. There might also be a preview on the topic to come.

Introductory discussion - We'll start at the right place based on strengths and areas for improvement within the topic. We aim to work at a pace which is good for the learner whilst providing sufficient challenge. We can discuss the importance and relevance of the topic.

Formative questions - These are questions that we sprinkle in regularly to check for understanding and to help inform how we progress through the lesson. We can then revisit sections, have further practice or move onto the next part based on individual needs.

Exam questions break-down - As part of our work on exam technique, we understand how questions are made up, what the examiner may be checking for, how to align our answers with the given number of marks and even what each mark is commonly given for!

Your turn! - We provide test questions and deliver these in a way which provides good practice for formal exams. This could include an on-screen timer or other arrangement that is of benefit to the individual.

Plenary - This is the part of the lesson where we consolidate our learning for the day and discuss where to focus next. Learners can ask any questions they would like to before we finish.

Job/UCAS applications

Support with job applications, CV-writing, Personal Statement drafting and preparation for interviews. We specialise in applications for students following Maths and Science-related career or further education roles and we can quickly highlight key areas of focus, prioritise content and structure drafts.

FAQs

Sessions are typically held online via the Microsoft Teams platform. Each student has their own Meeting room link.

Typically there is no obligation to continue sessions if you would not wish to. Please ask us directly about arrangements for block bookings.

Invoices are usually sent on a weekly basis to your email address. If multiple sessions are taken within a week, these will all show on the same invoice. Invoice emails will either be directly from us or from a trusted third party (such as Lloyds bank).

We encourage email communications from students and parents/carers/guardians and usually respond to emails within 24 hours. We can also chat via WhatsApp message or phone call.

Although students are usually advised to begin with a single session per week, adjustments may be made at our sole discretion on a case-by-case basis, subject to availability of slots.

We can cover multiple subjects if desired and this may be done in one of a number of potential configurations. Upon getting to know students, we will be better placed to suggest a lesson structure based on goals and learning style.

I (the principal tutor) am qualified to the level of Master in Chemistry and have attained a PGCE in secondary education as well as earned full QTS for teaching in the UK. I have also worked in the chemical industry as well as within I.T. before transitioning into teaching.
